Homeowner Profile: The Schreiners

We’ve learned in our many years of designing and building custom homes in the Texas Hill Country that no two homeowners’ visions are alike. When Kim and Terry Schreiner approached us to build their German settlement inspired dream home, we knew it would be unlike anything we’ve done before. Read the Schreiners’ story about their 4,100 square foot home in Boerne, Texas, and their experience building with Authentic Custom Homes.

We live in a beautiful Fredericksburg, prairie-style home with our two teenage children, three beagles, and a rabbit named Dusty. After a year of searching for the perfect property, we settled on a beautiful 28 acre site in Boerne, Texas. The peaceful, quiet surroundings of the Texas Hill Country made it the perfect place to build our new home.

Spaces Crafted for Living

Our home consists of 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and a host of special rooms. We have a media room, great room, music room, formal dining room, laundry room (which also houses our homeschool materials), and a breakfast nook off of the kitchen. I love the special touch in the breakfast nook: the table is the same one I ate all of my meals at when I was a child. My great grandparents used it in their south Texas boarding house many years ago, so there is a lot of history there.

We use every inch of our new home. Our wing of the house may be our favorite because it belongs exclusively to us. We use our exercise room frequently, and our bedroom is soft and quiet. The dining room is perfect for formal dinners and entertaining family and friends. The fireplace in the dining room is unique, especially since it’s raised off the floor. We often sit in the living room and enjoy the view outside. The timber frame structure creates a cozy space as well.

We love Amish furniture and the style of our home. A timber frame was a non-negotiable feature in our home. In the end, we incorporated it only into our great room to save on cost. It is by far the most unique aspect of our home. Visitors also comment on our concrete floors and our dark stained, 5-panel wood doors. ACH even came up with a way to incorporate an antique etched glass panel that we owned into a sliding barn door. We had never been able to find a place for it because it was so heavy.

Choosing the Look and the Builder

We always knew we wanted a simple country home that looked like it was straight off of the prairie. We researched timber frame homes and techniques for over twenty years through magazines and visiting with timber home builders. We originally aimed to build in south Austin, but we decided to build between Bulverde and the I10 corridor when we couldn’t secure the right plot of land in Austin. A timber frame builder recommended several builders in the Boerne area, including Authentic Custom Homes. After interviewing six builders, we selected Authentic Custom Homes because they listened closely to our vision and we felt we were all on the same page.

Building from a Distance

When we started to build our home, we were living in Fort Worth, Texas. Authentic Custom Homes made it very easy for us to build from a distance. We showed Authentic Custom Homes a picture as a launch point for the design process. Once we described the rooms and the flow of the house, Israel came back to us with his first drawing. They walked us through their processes and set expectations from the very beginning. Everything was done on a very structured timeline, which allowed us to stay on track with the completion date and budget. We were even able to check in on build progress and timeline, viewing details and photos through ACH’s online client portal before we even came to visit! The ACH team was great at communicating when they needed us for selections so we could plan ahead to make the trip.

Overall, they were very easy to work with, allowing us to make changes and incorporate all of the features we hoped for in our dream home. There was no challenge too great for the team at Authentic Custom Homes. We took comfort in working with a single builder for the whole process, as many builders don’t offer a holistic service. We had peace of mind knowing our dream home was crafted with care all under one roof.
